Peyronie's disease is a connective tissue disorder involving the growth of fibrous plaques in the . The condition is named for Francois Gigot de la Peyronie, who described it in ; however, the condition may have been described around.2017
Erectile dysfunction ED is a condition in which a man has difficulty getting or maintaining an erection. It can cause problems in the bedroom for men of all ages. This often causes anxiety and discomfort. However, research suggests that the condition may develop after trauma to the penis, such as bending or hitting. This can cause bleeding and subsequent scar tissue buildup. While injury may be the cause of the condition in some cases, the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Clearinghouse NKUDC notes that often the condition arises without a traumatic event.
Peyronie disease is the most common cause of painful penile induration. Fibrous tissue plaques form within the tunica albuginea, causing painful deformity and shortening of the penis. Though clinical diagnosis is usually accurate, the role of imaging is to evaluate extension of plaques, whether the penile septum is involved, and to examine the relationship between the plaques and the penile vasculature. Its age of onset is around years of age. It is also associated with:. Echogenic plaques are usually seen on the dorsal aspect of the penis, however they may also be seen on the ventral aspect. Calcifications are also frequently seen.
The plaque builds up inside the tissues of a thick, elastic membrane called the tunica albuginea. The most common area for the plaque is on the top or bottom of the penis. As the plaque builds up, the penis will curve or bend, which can cause painful erections. Curves in the penis can make sexual intercourse painful, difficult, or impossible. ED happens when a man is unable to achieve or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. An erection occurs when blood flow increases into the penis, making it expand and become firm.
Understanding ED: Peyronie’s Disease
Peyronie's disease is a connective tissue disorder involving the growth of fibrous plaques in the soft tissue of the penis. Specifically, scar tissue forms in the tunica albuginea , the thick sheath of tissue surrounding the corpora cavernosa , causing pain, abnormal curvature, erectile dysfunction , indentation, loss of girth and shortening. -
